days

Saturday

Yesterday Scientist did a narration on a six paragraph selection from A Little History of the World, about the Renaissance. We practiced study strategies, that is, what to do when you have no idea what the passage was supposed to be about. First we look up any words he can't define in his own words. Then he summarizes by paragraph or by sentence if that's too hard. This helps him pinpoint exactly what he doesn't understand, which helps him phrase a question that can allow him to get an answer.

It was such a drag (an hour) that I couldn't bear to make him do math right away afterwards. Then the Daddio came home and whisked him and all of the other kids away to an annual Taste of Ourtown, which lasted until long after bedtime.

Sunday

Hero made a book out of all of the works with words he's produced. That was unschooling. I did suggest stapling everything into a book, but that was because I was frustrated with the number of papers floating around.

Storyteller wrote in a diary. That was unschooling too. He found a little American Girls diary at the flea market on Friday. I don't know why my seven-year-old son likes American Girls, but I sure as heck don't care about gender roles if pink and purple stuff is what gets him reading and writing independently.

The Scientist did an assessment in LoF Fractions.

Sunday was the ten year anniversary of the death of the man who was the Daddio's boyfriend from their mid-adolescence through their late thirties. Gamer, who is just barely old enough to remember Patrick, is with his mom and the Daddio at a barbecue in honor of Patrick's life.

It's also Father's Day. I should really call my dad.

If that isn't enough, it's also Midsummer. Other Pagan friends are doing totally awesome things that involve the actual outdoors. We are doing a Druish/Jewid sederish ritual around the table. The grass is not greener. The grass is not greener.

I'd like to get a WWE lesson in for Scientist, too, but I'm not sure I can make that happen, with the Midsummer festivities.

Monday

will hopefully be a little more settled down and productive. We got into bad habits when I was very very sick. We need to get out of them again. I have vowed to do some schoolwork everyday. Every. Day. So far that's working. In September, when the school year officially starts, that will be math, composition, grammar, music, Latin and Greek everyday. Right now that seems so impossible. I am determined that we WILL wrestle the days to the ground.
