Ukulele for First Grade

My sons and I have caught ukulele fever. (Apparently it's a thing.) The Scientist is interested in watching what I do and copying it. The Storyteller has declared that he is going to make up his own chords. The Hero and I are taking a traditional route. We want to play songs that we know, and we want instructions on how to do so.

Handily for us, the good writer at gotaukulele.com has arranged common childrens' songs and nursery rhymes for uke players on these three pages. I made up a schedule for the Hero and I to study these, arranged by what new chord we have just learned. In case anyone else out there wants to learn to do this same thing, here is our plan.

Lesson on C chord

Lesson on G7

Lesson on Hot Cross Buns

Lesson on See Saw Margery Daw

Lesson on Mary Had a Little Lamb

Lesson on London Bridge is Falling Down

Lesson on F chord

Lesson on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Lesson on Do You Know the Muffin Man

Lesson on G chord

Lesson on The Wheels on the Bus

Lesson on Pease Porridge Hot

Lesson on Old King Cole

Lesson on Frere Jacques

Lesson on Row Row Row Your Boat

Lesson on This Old Man

Lesson on the Hokey Pokey

Lesson on Baa Baa Black Sheep

Lesson on Sing a Song of Six Pence

Lesson on How Much Is That Doggie in the Window

Lesson on Little Boy Blue

Lesson on Humpty Dumpty

Lesson on Am

Lesson on Mary Mary Quite Contrary

Lesson on Pop Goes the Weasel

Lesson on A7

Lesson on D

Lesson on Old Macdonald Had a Farm

Lesson on D7

Lesson on Head Shoulders Knees and Toes

Lesson on B

Lesson on C7

Lesson on Polly Put the Kettle On

Also, I assembled a chord chart that includes just what is learned for these nursery songs.

Soon I am sure I will have footage to share of a very silly little ukulele player messing it all up gleefully. That's the goal. Hack it til we're having fun.

  1. Awesome, Rose! Schmooey comes to the music store with me here, and he LOVES the ukeleles. He calls them tiny guitars and is quite certain he is going to be the next great tiny guitar player. :-D I haven't decided if I will get him one for his birthday - he will be 5. I don't know how to play it myself. Do you?
