I know I'm supposed to think highly of my own kids, but...

Sometimes... okay, a lot of the time... I think the Hero is, well, not very bright.

Ah, no. I'm sure he's just five, and that's what it is.

Most of the time I'm sure.

Today, as I always do after he brushes his teeth, I declared, "time to read!" This is always -- always always -- followed by the two of us sitting on the couch with the current read-aloud, and me reading it to him.

But tonight when I said, "time to read," he burst into tears, panicked. "But I don't know how to read! I CAN'T do reading time!"

  1. Maybe The Hero is getting to the point where he wants to read on his own instead of always experiencing books through read alouds. That could be the source of his frustration
