Usually when I write down some little thing a child did that I want to remember, it's about the youngest kid. Younger kids are just funnier. But today it was the Scientist, twice. First, that he sat and read all through his Fractions book, then all through Decimals and Percents, and at dinnertime was found with Beginning Algebra. He was excited, in fact, that we had Geometry, too. It's that Fred. You just have to know what happens next. The Scientist finally gave up when he hit graphing a curve. Not bad for an almost-ten-year-old in one sitting, eh?
Secondly, something the Scientist said after dinner, while we were playing Apples to Apples. "Feminists are feminine, right?" he argued. The Partner, friend of many a young radical feminist, said, "you'd be surprised," and I thought, yeah, you would be surprised. Wouldn't you expect someone advocating for the worthiness of women to do womanly things? I get that it was a victory for us to be allowed to wear pants, but, as Peggy Seeger sings, "Nature gives us equal chances and to get 'em you shouldn't have to wear pantses." I wonder if Scientist wasn't thinking of the very same line. He's grown up hearing that song, singing it, dancing to it, and he sang along from the very front row when she came to town with her banjo.
